Emotional regulation

This topic has actually popped up for me quite a few times during my therapy sessions. In my case, I'm the type of person that can get overwhelmed or overstimulated when too many changes occur at once. Cori ( my therapist ) told me, "have you ever noticed that certain people don't want to watch new TV shows but they'll constantly rewatch their favorite movies over and over again? That's a form of emotional regulation. Regardless of how the characters of their favorite movie end up, the control of the situation is in knowing how the story ends. There are no plot twists... you know exactly what to expect."

When you are in a new environment with nothing tying you to how you used to be, there are no road maps other than the ones you're creating. There are no reference guides. You have to create a new routine. The trick is trying to not overwhelm or underwhelm yourself in the process. It will require patience. What would you accomplish if you knew for a certainty that everything would be a YES?
